(DES MOINES, Iowa) -- Investigators are still trying to find the driver of a hit-and-run accident that killed a man over the weekend, the Des Moines Register reports.

Police said 58-year-old Clayton Evan Payne was hit by a vehicle while crossing Sixth Avenue at the College Avenue intersection at about 12:45 a.m. Saturday. A few witnesses stopped to help Payne, but left before speaking to police. Some have since called and spoke with detectives, but the driver has still not been identified, the paper says.

Officials said Payne died at a local hospital later.

Officials said it doesn't appear the driver was in the wrong, but it is a crime to leave the scene of a collision, according to the Register.

Anyone with information is asked to call Polk County Crime Stoppers at (515) 223-1400 or Des Moines Police.
