(DES MOINES, Iowa) -- A West Des Moines man was arrested and charged with intent to commit sex abuse after sending sexually explicit messages to a 12-year-old girl.

The 52-year-old man, Michael Shumway, was an acquaintance of the girl. He attempted to contact her several times, sending explicit text and voice messages, and attempting to see her at her Urbandale home and a house in West Des Moines, according to Urbandale Police.

The inappropriate attention prompted the girl and a parent to file a report at the Urbandale police station on February 19. Shumway was arrested on Tuesday on one count of assault without injury, with intent to commit sex abuse.

He was released from Polk County Jail after posting a $2,000 bond.
